As April continued to bring cold temperatures and ugly weather, the
table was set for another memorable spring poker run in Houtzdale,
Pa. A handful of campers came in on Friday night to brave the frigid
winds. By morning, frost had covered everything with a thick chill.
We were greeted by our hosts “Sonny” and “Abby500”
(PaAtving members) with warm smiles which didn’t touch the cold
weather!

|
|
Trucks
and trailers made their way into the new staging location, which is
used for camping, parking and registration. Registration was easily
handled by using an old construction trailer left behind from the
lands past strip mining days…in one side and out the other.
All riders qualified for a door prize drawing at the end of the day.
Track and Trail of State College brought in a new Honda Rincon to
raffle off to a lucky winner. |

The
25-mile trail quickly grew into a maze of tight woods, large fields,
open right-of-ways, twisty hill climbs and soupy mud holes along the
way. There was no shortage of rock either. |

|
Man
and machine got a good workout. Trails were well marked with florescent
ribbons. Many trails were fresh cut for added mileage and a new look.
Riders stopped at four checkpoints to draw a poker chip…hopeful
to receive cash on the barrel! |

Just
over 700 riders came from all corners of the state including young,
old, a couple of pro racers from Hetrick’s Racing, CPATVA
(Central Pennsylvania All Terrain Vehicle Assoc)
Club members and a strange group called the “River Rats”
from Ohio who made the toughest mud hole look like a tiny puddle! |

|
The
members of the Houtzdale Fire Department, including pizza, dogs, burgers,
pop, fries, nachos, etc, provided food. Future
rides are planned for the summer of ’03 including a 2-day
