Largest insured ATV trail system in Ontario Canada launched

ELLIOT LAKE - A 300-kilometre All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) trail network was launched September 16 here. No other trail of this size exists in Ontario.

The entire trail network is insured and mapped. The planning team’s emphasis has been on safe and responsible riding, shared use trails, and environmental consideration.

ATV club
The trail network was spearheaded by the local ATV club, in alliance with the Discovery North Centre for Business, City of Elliot Lake and the local business community. Funds were provided by the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario Tourism Marketing Program, FedNor and Ministry of Northern Development. The total project costs are $381,000. This trail system is being developed under a project called ATV Ontario, and plans are to develop similar trails in communities across Ontario. Best practices will be modeled in Elliot Lake and shared with interested communities.

According to Howie Hennessey of the Elliot Lake ATV Club: “Elliot Lake was a natural choice for the development of a massive trail system. The proximity of wilderness areas to the city core, the incredible vistas and diverse landscapes make it an incredible ride for ATV riders of all skill levels.”

The trial will not be for ATV riders alone. Marie Murphy-Foran, the Project Manager states: “This trail network will be truly ‘shared-use’, with hikers, bikers, photographers and artists all enjoying the space.”

The environment has been carefully considered during the trail development process. Sensitive areas are off limits, buffer zones are in place and measures have been taken to protect and promote the natural environment.

The trail design is looped, which means a rider is never more than 30 kilometres from the city, despite the entire length of trail being more than 300 kilometres. A rider can plan a comfortable day trip and access the City amenities as part of their vacation experience.

Visitor pass
Visiting riders must purchase a visitor pass and map, which provides them with unlimited day access to the insured trails. Interested visitors can find out more about local guides, outfitters, accommodation by calling 1-800-661-6192.
