Once again, the Shortcreek Sportsman’s Club proved to be one
of the best event holders in the east. With a large spring melt and
rainy conditions, the first event of the 2003 year turned brutal!
Campers poured in on Friday evening to relax before the big ride.

As
usual, we saw license plates from at least six different states. Shortcreek’s
acreage quickly became a mix of ATV enthusiasts and wildlife. |

Saturday
morning proved to be a challenge for incoming vehicles. The fields
swallowed up several 4x4 trucks who were not so “like a rock”,
“ford tough”, or “ram tough”. By the end of
the day, the entire site was a huge mud hole. By mid-morning, just
over 2800 riders showed up for the 32-mile challenge. |

Door prizes, to be handed out at the day’s end, were $300.00,
$200.00, $100.00, plus six $20.00 Gift Certificates. You also have
the opportunity to draw chances on a new four-wheeler! As usual, club
members had both breakfast and a large lunch menu with all the best. |

This
ride was a four-wheeler’s paradise! The mud holes were all full
of water and heavy-duty mud. Trails were slick and the creeks were
full. Hills were tough to get up and each turn was a new adventure
in the slick mud. The sport machines spent all of their time throwing
roost while the utilities played like swine at the local farm. There
was no shortage of mud! |

There
were plenty of staff members to keep watch and help out the wounded
machines. The middle checkpoint offers a “coalminers sandwich”
(a deep fried hot dog that will surely clog the toughest arteries)
to all the riders. Pop, water and many paper towels are on hand as
well. |

Wildlife
was in abundance and was a quick reminder of our host’s goal...to
rise funding for the Shortcreek Sportsman’s Club. Hat’s
off to another fine event that always sets the pace for other event
holders to follow suit. |
