The
season’s weather provided one of the last few chances of good
outdoor working conditions for the year to roll up ones sleeves and
donate some good hours to a great trail system opening up in 2003.
The call went out to riders for help on a blossoming trail system
to which more than four different groups and individual riders showed
up from all over the great state of Pennsylvania to pitch in for a
great future.
With
the help of the organized determined volunteer workforce the project
was pushed ahead of schedule, cut future costs, and hummed with efficiently.
Three
teams over two weekends split up to work one three separate bridges
in three different stages of development. The first crew was adding
“approach” railings to a bridge that was completed the
weekend before. The second crew (PaAtving crew) was constructing the
railings on the second bridge in preparation for the” last step”
of construction, which concludes with the installation of the approach
railings.
The
third crew spent the day working on the largest of the three bridges
installing the strong backs to the bridge superstructure that would
eventually support the railing that are to be installed on the second
(work weekend) Sunday.
The
third crew had the tallest task of the day, and built up great momentum
to gang tackle the project by the end of the day
The
PaAtving crew showed up on the second work weekend Saturday, “after
driving three hours” and took the assignment (at the riders
meeting) of constructing the rails on the second bridge. After some
impromptu to experimentation, we developed the best system for constructing
the rails and knocked the job out in good time.
Lunch
for the day, “hot chipped ham” sandwiches along with delicious
potato salad was supplied.
Look
for more exciting things to come from this “motorized”
Rail Trail in 2003 as it becomes a “model for cooperative
effort” in Pennsylvania public trail systems.
