An eight-page
written survey conducted by the Pennsylvania State University
on behalf of DCNR is being mailed this month to 20,000 Pennsylvania
residents representing every county.
"We encourage those citizens who receive the recreation
survey to take 10 minutes to fill it out," said Secretary
Oliver. "This information will determine how Pennsylvania
moves forward with planning and funding future recreation
projects."
Citizens will be asked what recreation facilities they use
within their communities and what is necessary in order to
meet their needs. The survey will attempt to understand why
residents do or do not use the facilities in their area.
A subsequent telephone survey conducted by Millersville University
will begin in November. A hundred people in each county will
be interviewed.
The data from both surveys will be used to develop Pennsylvania's
Recreation Plan, a five-year prioritization of the Commonwealth's
recreation needs that will be used to guide funding. The state
must have a completed, approved recreation plan in order to
be eligible for federal recreation funds.
The last recreation plan was completed in 1992.
The plan also is incorporating information from nine stakeholders
meetings held across the Commonwealth over the last two years
with elected officials, community leaders, recreation planners
and citizens. A 10th meeting is scheduled for the spring 2003.
Input from DCNR's Conservation and Natural Resources Advisory
Council, Recreation Advisory Committee, the Pennsylvania's
Greenways Commission, and the Greenways/State Recreation Plan
Interagency Coordination Team also will be included in the
formation of the plan.
