HI Guys & Girls, This past weekend, we ventured to Altoona, Pa. to join
forces with the locals & the Freewheelers out Virginia. When a final
head count was made we had twenty men, women & children aboard every
type quad under the sun gathered for some off road action. Our trail leaders
for the day were " Horse " & his Honda " Foreman "
& Jake & his Yamaha 3 to 4 wheeler conversion (nice job). |
Once on the
trail it didn't take long to see that this groups skill level was
too wide spread to continue as ONE! So after a few shaky encounters
with traversing off camber ridges & some rocky hills approaching,
we split into 2 groups. |
The more
experienced & skilled riders followed " Horse " over
the more technical trail route across the mountain, were as the others
took a less challenging route. Once on the other side of the mountain
we reunited and continued until noon & back to Jake's farm we
went. Glenn & his " Raptor " were going to drag race
at Bedford's Fair Grounds Later that afternoon, so Ed & Glenn
packed up their gear & headed off to the races. Part of the group
went to the races to cheer on Glenn, while the rest of us were itching
to log some trail time! So after wishing Glenn good luck, we fired
up our quads & headed out for parts unknown. This group was ready
to " BLAST " & wasted NO time in making tracks for the
hills! |
Horse "
called it a day, so " Jake" was now trail boss & made
that little Honda Recon scoot down the trail! He did his best over
the coarse of the afternoon & evening to shake us from his tail,
through tight twisty trails, filled with mud pits, rocks, ditches,
hills & fallen trees!!!! |
But this
group hung right in there & we had a BLAST, with everyone keeping
pace
with our leader! Now this was fun!!!!! Ryan & Mike on their Honda
Recons were up Ron's & my A - - all afternoon & passed us
and made us eat dust
every chance they got!!!!!!!!! |
The "
DUST " was so thick you could cut it with a knife!!!!!!It was
the toughest part of every ride, but we never let a little thinglike
that stop us!!!!!!!! HA! HA! If they had sport quads, the boys on
the Recons would surely give us a run for our money! |
Later
in the day, we came upon hill climb area known to the locals as "
BIG MURPH ". After sizing up the situation Ron & his 400EX
was the only one to challenge & conquer " BIG
MURPH ". Our next adventure was to check our " DIRT HARRY
" an infamous hill climb that NO quad had ever successfully climbed.
From the bottom it didn't look too bad, so around we went to see first
hand from the top why " DIRTY HARRY " was labeled as such?????
Once at the top looking DOWN you can see it deserved its name!!!!!!!!!!!
Straight up with nasty rocks sticking out
at all angles & if you fell, more than likely you'd break your
back or worse as you & your quad tumbled downwards!!!! As we said
good-bye to the hill climbs our bellies started to growl!!!!!! Jake
took us to the same bar that has the GREAT food! The food is awesome
& BIG portions at CHEAP |
prices!!!!!!!!!!
Ron got a Cheeseburger for $2.50 that was 4 inches thick, and
I got a Roast beef platter that had enough grub to feed at least
twostarving men!!!!!!! |
After feeding our faces & with our
guts busting out of our pants, we headed back to Jake's farm.
Along the way we came across Glenn & his dad, who had
returned from Bedford & the races. Glenn & his "
RAPTOR " took " FIRST PLACE " in his division!!!!!!!
Good job GLENN!!!!
After
socializing we rolled back into the farm around 9:30pm & gave
our quads a
quick wash & back to the motel for a hot shower & some
much-deserved rest.
DAY # 2 as everyone gassed up & got ready for our Sunday ride;
some faces
& quads were missing. Henry & Judy (Polaris's), Cheryl
(Honda 2x4) Trina
(Honda 2x4), Ryan (Recon), Jake's youngest boy, plus a few others
decided the DUST was too much. So off we went for another day
of stirring
up the Pa. DUST!!!!!!!!! Jim & his 300 Kawasaki 4x4 was feeling
frisky &
joined our party & kept up pace with the other utility quads
all day! Nice
to finally ride with him & also discuss the merits of certain
club
functions. Jake led us back to " BIG MURPH " so others
could challenge it
if they so desired.
Upon arrival we noticed a smashed up Ford compact
car at the base of " BIG MURPH ". " Damn someone
dumped their junk back here" was my first impression!!!!!
Upon further scrutiny it appears someone had too much to
DRINK & attempted to climb " BIG MURPH " in a DAMNED
car!!!!!!! You could see the tire tracks end about 10 feet from
the top & see the marks as it TUMBLED down the face of "
BIG MURPH"!!!!!!!!!! TOTALED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So
Jerry & his winch equipped Honda Foreman pulls it away &
then pretends to be" BIG FOOT " as he starts to push
the car out of our immediate riding area it STOPS & Jerry
& his quad pops up & keeps going until he is on top the
hood of the car!!!!!!!! Should have seen his face!!!!!!!!!!!!
After
extracting himself & quad from the hood, he finishes the job of
relocating the destroyed car. Before leaving, Glenn, had to prove
he was also a hill climber & conquered " BIG MURPH ".
Time to head
for the farm! Mark & his Raptor & Ron & I banged bars
the whole way back to the farm in a cloud of dust!!!!! Everyone made
it home safely & no major trail damage to any of the quads.
Time
to load up & head down the road!!!!!!! Looking forward to
our next trip to Altoona, Pa. to join Jake & his friends
for some more fun & adventure. Till next time! ALWAYS WEAR
SAFETY GEAR & BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!! |
P.S. -SPEEDY RACER forgot to mention that Jake's dad spent Sunday
morning with us as well & enjoyed his company!
